Enjoying
the great outdoors is first and foremost at First Settlers. Guided
and non-guided outdoor activities outfitted by NORTH WOODS TOURS
include traditional northern Maine fishing and hunting, canoeing, kayaking, camping, hiking, snow
shoeing, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling.
For the guest who wants the quiet life, there is a
simple walk in the woods on prepared trails, a Maine Moose watch,
or a fall foliage photography tour. Outfitting
services, Maine Guide Cookouts, private cabin
and outdoor equipment
rentals are also available. North Woods Tours is an authorized Old Town and Scott Canoe
Dealer for canoes, kayaks, and paddling equipment.
Paddling
Guests
find our local paddling waters especially quiet and user-friendly.
Some of our favorite places are the wetlands of Crooked Brook, the
unspoiled shoreline of East Grand Lake, the remote Baskahegan
Stream or the historic Mattawamkeag River. These waters offer
paddlers many opportunities to view wildlife, fish, and relax
while experiencing the beauty and quietness of the north woods.
Trips may be from half-day to overnight and guided or non-guided
with canoes or kayaks. Shuttling services are provided and shore
lunches included on guided trips. Multi-day, fully-outfitted and
guided wilderness canoe trips on the St. Croix and Allagash Rivers
are also available through North Woods Tours.
Fishing
From May to
September, the angler may choose from lake or stream fishing for landlocked
salmon, brook trout, lake trout, or small
mouth bass. Fish East Grand from our private lake access or
any of the ten (10) other cold and warm-water fisheries serviced
by the Lodge and North Woods Tours. Remote back country guided
fishing trips are also offered in the Allagash and West Branch
regions of the State. Angling
techniques and equipment can vary from wade and drift fly fishing, and spin-casting, to trolling streamer flies and lures. Lodge preference is to fish at or
near the surface with fly rod and/or light gear, whenever and
wherever possible.
Trips
may be guided or non-guided and include boats, motors, canoes, and
gear. Guided trips
include a shore lunch cooked over an open fire.
The
Fall
Foliage,
Upland Game & Whitetail Deer Hunting
The
autumn is a special time at First Settlers. The foliage viewed
from our Lodge shows off some of most brilliant landscapes in
northern Maine. For the seasoned sportsman, “it doesn’t get
any better” than combining the colors and crisp air of autumn
with the heritage of hunting. Our area is blessed with excellent
covers and populations of woodcock and ruffed grouse, and hundreds
of thousands of acres of “big woods” habitat for white tail
deer and moose. We
are especially proud of our guided hunts, and cater to small
parties and exclusive group use of the Lodge and property. Dog
kennels are available for complementary use. The fall is truly a
rewarding time to be in the Maine Woods.
The
Winter
Snowshoeing,
X-Country Skiing, Snowmobiling
and Ice Fishing
Maine
winter outdoors means snow shoeing, cross-country skiing,
snowmobiling, or ice fishing.
Prepared snowshoe and cross country ski trails lead
directly from the Lodge to remote areas of back-country forests.
Snowmobilers travel on some of the most scenic and quiet trails in
the State. Winter recreation packages may include guided or
non-guided tours, Lodge to Lodge arrangements, and snowmobile and
clothing rentals. Ice fishing huts and outfitted fishing trips are
available on East Grand and other area Lakes.
